Bethany glanced at the time and realized they still had time. Noticing Elysia hugging her tightly, Bethany gently patted her back to comfort her.
Mateo's phone call lasted about four or five minutes. After hanging up, he walked over with a serious expression.
"What happened?" Bethany asked, her voice full of concern.
"Nothing." He shook his head, standing there, lost in thought. After a long pause, he finally explained, "Why don't you and Elysia head over first? I'll join you later."
"Daddy..." Elysia said softly.
"Ely, don't worry. I'll be there before the sports day starts," he soothed, giving Elysia's head a reassuring rub before turning to Bethany. "You take Ely to preschool first."
"Okay." Bethany could tell he didn't want to bring it up, so she decided not to press.
Mateo grabbed the bag, saying, "I'll take this since you're holding Ely. See you later, Ely. I'll be there as soon as I can."
"Goodbye, Daddy. Hurry up!" Elysia said, her voice filled with concern.
