"Asher's condition isn't too serious, but like you, he needs close supervision," Bethany replied. Thinking of Asher made her heart ache; he was such a wonderful child, yet he had to live with autism.
"Mommy, don't be sad." Elysia wiped her tears, looking determined. "I won't cry anymore. I want to protect Ash and take care of him."
"That's my girl, Ely. You're the best," Bethany said, hugging Elysia close as they stood in the café doorway. She didn't step outside, keeping her gaze fixed on Emma and Asher as they approached a man.
The sky was dark, and the man's silhouette was faint under the streetlamp. Bethany still couldn't make out his features, but she felt an inexplicable heaviness in her chest, an ache that kept her from stepping out of the café.
She couldn't help wondering if they'd met before. What was behind this strange feeling?
