After dinner at Carson's house, Bethany was getting ready to leave. To her surprise, Mabel offered to walk her out.
"Mom, I'll go!" Carson quickly offered to see Bethany off.
"No need, I'll go. You stay here and finish your homework," Mabel said, nodding shyly at Bethany. "Let's go."
"Thank you, but you don't need to walk me out," Bethany replied, already growing fond of them. Carson was a bright and sensible son, while Mabel was a kind and gentle mother. It was impossible not to feel deeply for them.
"It's too dark here without streetlights. You might feel scared walking alone," Mabel said, turning on a flashlight and shining it down the path ahead. "Let's go."
After saying goodbye to Carson, Bethany followed Mabel out.
