Chapter 3 You Have To Be Humble When You're Trapped In An Inferior Situation
She curled her frozen fingers and lifted her head after bracing herself. “It was my fault back then, but I’ve gotten the punishment I deserve. Can you just pretend that you never saw me today, Mr. Harris? Can you be magnanimous and give me a break?”
He lifted his eyebrows and curled his frigid lips. It was as if he had heard a joke. “Why? Do you think the grudge between us will go away just because you went to prison for two years? Leah’s legs will never get better. Sophia, do you think this punishment is enough?”
She was frozen. Her leg under her skirt was in immense pain. At the end of the day, he was still doing this for Leah.
If they were to sit down and talk about this, she had repaid her debts a long time ago.
However, she did not dare to tell him this. She did not dare to provoke a man like Charles.
“Then, what do you want, Mr. Harris? I got what I deserved.”
The snow was falling even heavier now. He did not say anything. He lifted the umbrella in his hand, and Mr. Lewis walked over.
“Sir?”
Charles inspected Sophia. There was a hint of coldness in his dark eyes. Perhaps he recalled the pain Leah had to go through during her physical therapy. He lifted his eyebrows and said as if he was Satan from hell, “Sophia, the law punished you. I have not.”
He turned his head to look at Mr. Lewis. “Mr. Lewis, clean her up and send her to Dream Club.”
After he said that, Sophia’s face turned white. Dream Club was a money squandering establishment for people who were born with a silver spoon in the Jing Circle.
Charles wanted to snap her last strand of dignity by sending her there. He wanted to use reality to remind her that she used to be the VIP over there two years ago, but two years later, she was now a criminal who attempted murder. She had become someone everyone looked down on.
The cold seeped out from her bones. She gritted her teeth and asked slowly, “Charles, do you have to be so heartless?”
Perhaps he did not expect her to question him, but Charles chuckled sarcastically. “Sophia, it’s been two years, and you still haven’t learned. You have to be humble when you're trapped in a losing situation, don’t you know that?”
Sophia lowered her head. She bit her lip and did not say anything else.
Of course, she knew that. She knew that so well.
Her overbearing manner and arrogance had all been worn down when she was in prison.
Perhaps he was not happy with how she was resigning herself to adversity, but Charles frowned and walked back to his car after turning around. “Tell Marie to take care of Miss White herself. Don’t disappoint me.”
In a flash, the black Bentley disappeared in the snow. Mr. Lewis hesitated for a while. In the end, he still helped Sophia up.
He could still remember this woman’s arrogance and pride two years ago. Now, she looked extremely pitiful.
Sophia suddenly remembered something. She asked while shivering, “How’s Leah?”
Mr. Lewis was taken aback. He answered obscurely, “How great can a dancer be when she has lost the chance to be on stage?”
Sophia smiled pitifully.
Indeed, as long as Leah was miserable, Charles would not give her a break.
…
Sophia was sent to Dream Club for over half a month. Charles did not show up even once during that time. Sometimes, she would wonder if she dreamed about that encounter.
However, she was indeed standing in the hall of Dream Club.
“Hello, welcome to Dream Club.”
Sophia could not remember how many times she had bowed today. After the guests entered the door, she could not control herself but to punch her leg that had lost all feeling.
Her colleague, Megan Zander, peered at her. She was looking at Sophia with pity. “The manager is so weird. Everyone’s allowed to go on shifts except you. I feel like she’s doing this on purpose. She’s only making things hard for you because you’re pretty.”
Sophia shook her head with no expression on her face. “I can’t quit.”
