Amongst the girls present, they were distinctly out of place.
These privileged girls wore facades of cordiality, but their eyes held nothing but contempt when they fell on Mary and
Bella.
“Have something to eat.” Kennedy extended a plate of food to Bella.
“Thank you.”
Accepting it, Bella began to eat. The women who had escorted Millie out returned, their gazes filled with disdain as they regarded Mary.
Bella was suddenly overcome with boredom. “I think I’ll head back, Mary. Care to join me?”
Mary shifted, about to voice something, but held herself back after a moment’s hesitation.
Derik held her close and directed his gaze at Bella. “Bella, she’s not going anywhere.”
“But she has work tomorrow,” Bella protested.
Derik turned to Kennedy. “Could you give your employee a day off tomorrow?”
Kennedy paused, then glanced at Bella. “Today is Derik’s birthday, and we should honor his wishes. Let’s go. I’ll drive you home.”
