I vented my frustration, “He bankrupted my family! My parents were so devastated that their health declined.”
Brunel’s frown deepened. “When did this happen? Why didn’t I know about it? This isn’t something that could happen quietly.”
I hung my head and made a shushing gesture, whispering, “I’m telling you, it happened in a past life.”
Brunel looked at me as if I’d lost my mind, then said quietly, “Aisha, you’re drunk! You’re talking nonsense.”
I waved my hand grandly, insisting I wasn’t drunk and challenging Brunel to another round, claiming we should drink until we dropped.
