Laura was missing in action. She wasn't there to console me when I got back home after the talk about the new boss in town. Damian had told me she wouldn’t be a problem, but she was. For that singular reason, I did not want to wake up and go to work, even though it was Thursday. Thursday was usually the precursor to the weekend—my happiest time. But as it stood, I had no joy, no hope. I was merely hopeless. I groaned, burying my face into the pillow, wishing for a few more moments of peace.
