I smiled again, this time feeling a bit of the tightness in my chest leave as the giddiness came back once more. “I hope it works out for you, okay? A handsome man like you shouldn’t have to face another heartbreak,” she said as she waved me away and sent me on my way.
I was almost giddy as I left the shop, clutching the rose and card like some lovesick teenager. Maybe this wasn’t so hard after all. Charlotte was going to love it. I just had to get to the office, leave the rose on her desk with the note, and wait for her reaction.
But as fate would have it, anything regarding Charlotte never goes smoothly for me.
I hadn’t even made it two blocks before I heard footsteps behind me—fast, heavy footsteps. Before I could react, someone grabbed me from behind, shoving me against the side of a building.
"That's a good-looking watch, tough guy. If you'd hand it over, you won't get hurt," a rough voice growled in my ear.
