"Gil?" I repeated. The name threw me off for a second, but then it clicked—Alex must have meant Gilbert.
When we sorted out Alex's paperwork and all the formalities, Aunt Tina and Uncle Jackson didn't bother teaching her how to properly address elders. So, she called me "Nance" and Uncle Jackson "Jack".
It felt a bit disrespectful and rude, so I spoke up about it at the time. But Aunt Tina and Uncle Jackson didn't seem to care—they let her do as she pleased.
