A wave of warmth mixed with bitterness washed over Evelyn, and tears streamed down her face. "Marie..." she sobbed.
"There, there. Don't cry," Marie consoled, speaking loudly for anyone listening outside. "Mrs. Monroe only wants what's best for you. Eat something, and everything will be alright."
Evelyn tucked the phone away and dove into the food, wolfing it down. She wanted to live, to fight.
Marie gently patted her back, her heart aching. "Slow down, don't choke. Have some soup first. Your stomach isn't used to so much food after fasting for so long."
Evelyn's throat was parched, making swallowing difficult. The first few bites were forced down, and soon, her throat began to hurt and taste metallic.
After Marie left with the dishes, Evelyn retreated to the bathroom and pulled out the phone. The competition was just a week away, with participants expected to arrive early for stage familiarization. Moreover, her flight was scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.
