‘I see.’ Elodie thanked the officer, then hung up.
‘What’s that look?’ Gabriel asked. ‘Is that a smile or a frown?’
Elodie rubbed her face with one hand. ‘I don’t know. Not sure how I feel about this…’
‘The call?’
‘Sebastian’s at the hospital. Car accident.’ Elodie shook her head. ‘Speeding on the highway at night, according to the officer.’
‘Karma,’ Gabriel commented.
‘Yeah, that’s what I was thinking.’
He placed a hand on her shoulder, his touch grounding. ‘Do you want to go see him?’
Elodie nodded. ‘Yes. I have questions.’

The air in the hospital room hung heavy with the sterile sting of disinfectant and the hushed hum of machinery.
Elodie stepped inside.
Sebastian lay dwarfed by the stark white bed, his overweight frame rendered fragile by the tangle of tubes and wires snaking across his torso.
He looked older, lines etched deeper around his eyes, even under the mask that hissed oxygen into his still lungs.
His thick brows, usually knotted in a scowl, were slack, his face pale
