Kieran left very decisively.

Emery watched as he left without hesitation. She felt that he and Tessa seemed strangely well-suited for each other. It was as though she was the third party interfering in their relationship.

Emery's stomach churned aggressively. Unable to hold it in, she crouched by the roadside and vomited uncontrollably into the bushes.

By the time the police arrived, she was deathly pale. They thought she was injured and needed to be taken to the hospital.

It was all a big misunderstanding.

At the police station, Emery completed her report and signed the papers. She was then sent to the detention room to wait.

Emery was wholly responsible since she had driven without a driving license in the middle of the night and even ended up damaging public property. She would have to pay the fines in full, but it was fortunate that she wouldn't be detained.

The police handed 

Kieran had arrived at the worst possible moment.

Emery hadn't yet had the chance to question Eric about his connection to the Carters when a car from the Carter Enterprises pulled up.

Kieran's face darkened immediately. His gaze swept over Eric as he said coldly, "Look at what you've done."

Eric averted his eyes and clutched his phone to his chest. He forced an awkward smile and replied, "The police called, so I couldn't pick up."

Emery stood off to the side and watched the both of them carefully. She had met most of the Carter family members before, but this man didn't seem familiar. Nothing crossed her mind.

That said, she was cold and hungry after a long night, so much so that she didn't even notice Kieran's gaze on her.

It wasn't until the man beside her gave her a nudge that Emery snapped back to reality. She immediately caught Kieran's scathing tone as he asked, "Have you see

Emery watched Kieran and Tessa in silence.

She had a wound on her forehead before she had gone to pick Kieran up. She had just taken another solid hit, but she was completely ignored as if she were invisible. 

Emery couldn't quite explain her feelings. After a while, when the pain lessened, she picked up her phone to call the police.

Her face was somewhat pale as she endured the pain. Emery methodically explained the situation to the police and confirmed their location.

In the dark of the night, she propped herself up with one hand and calmly said, "Yes… downtown, street No. 32. Thank you for the trouble."

She knew full well it was her momentary lapse that had caused the accident. Emery was fully at fault, and she accepted the responsibility.

It was only when Emery was talking to the traffic police that Kieran focused his attention on her. Their eyes met at just the right moment, and he showed no concern for her.

Through the rearview mirror, Kieran said coldly, "Wait here. I'll take Tessie to the hospital to get examined."

He had no concern for Emery's well-being. Emery said nothing when she heard him. She silently looked up and met his icy gaze through the rearview mirror for a long moment.

Emery hung up the phone and glanced at the sticker still stuck on the car. A sudden wave of calm washed over her.

"No one can leave." As she said this, she briefly scanned the unharmed Tessa. There was a sudden urge to force Kieran to make a choice.

Emery took a deep breath before speaking again. Her voice was tinged with urgency as she said, "Kieran, I didn't bring my driver's license."

She really hadn't brought it. Her bag had been left in her car, but since Kieran had suddenly switched to a different vehicle, she didn't have time to retrieve it.

Having called the police meant that her lack of a driver's license would be discovered. Emery might have to face penalties and detention, which could be up to 15 days.

She hoped that Kieran would think of her for once at this critical moment.

Kieran now had plenty of influence in this city. If he wanted to, he could easily have someone bring her driver's license to her.

Emery was terrified. Something had happened to her during college, and she still felt traumatized by the incident. She didn't want to end up in a cold detention room.

However, Kieran's face was hidden in the dark, and his gaze was indifferent, his expression unreadable. He knew the consequences of driving without a license. He also understood that Emery had emotional barriers and wouldn't be able to handle the outcome.

With Emery's limited connections, she would likely end up in detention for a couple of weeks without his help. Kieran frowned.

Tessa felt a hint of anxiety when she saw Kieran and Emery exchanging looks, and she loosened her grip on Kieran's hand. She said, "Key."

When she spoke, she interrupted Kierain's train of thought.

Unlike Emery, Tessa had seductive eyes. She parted her red lips slightly, perfectly embodying the trendy "femme fatale" look of the season. But her temperament was soft and gentle, and this contrast with her looks made her an irresistible sight to men.

Emery knew that Kieran wasn't an exception, so as soon as Tessa spoke, Emery's heart sank.

"I'm fine," Tessa said as she pushed Kieran away. She looked up at him with just the right amount of innocence. "Go and help Emery first."

Kieran glanced back at Tessa. When she noticed his attention, Tessa forced a smile and reached for the car door. "We've arrived, so I'll leave now." 

As she departed, Kieran's expression darkened. He stepped out of the car to stop her and said in a low voice, "I'll send you home."

Emery noticed the subtle tension between the two and pressed her lips together. Her heart sank further.

"Kieran," she called out as she got out of the car quietly. She stood in the dark and asked reluctantly, "What about me?"

Emery wondered what she was to Kieran.

Kieran seemed to just remember that there was someone behind him. He paused, turning back to look at Emery, whose eyes were teary from the wind. She was a pitiful sight.

Kieran furrowed his brows, and his gaze toward her was icy. 

"Emery," he said, his voice as cold as ice. "Do you really think that I'm supposed to always cover for you?"
