Chapter 75
The matter was left unsettled.
Grace spotted Nina standing behind the crowd, her eyes dull, lost in thought.
But Grace was sure Nina had heard every word Jesse just said.
"What are you zoning out for? If you're still mad, do you want me to toss Jesse into the lake for you?" Ezra waved his hand in front of Grace.
"No need. Getting entangled with Jesse is nothing but trouble." She snapped out of it and shook her head. "Though if your secret identity hadn't slipped out just now, we probably wouldn't have gotten off so easy, Dr. Nelson."
Ezra looked out at the lake, where the wind stirred ripples on the surface. He was smiling, but there was nothing but emptiness in his eyes.
"In this life, I'll only be Dr. Nelson, never Mr. Nelson."
His gentle voice carried the chill of the night breeze. There was a loneliness in it that was hard to put into words.
Ezra didn't explain, and Grace didn't ask.
The party was boring, so Grace decided to say goodbye to Sabrina and leave early.
