"Ms. Leonard, you're mistaken. Our friendship isn't as deep as you think. You don't need to concern yourself with my feelings." It was evident that Chandler's tone carried a touch of alienation.
Margaret continued. "That's fine then. I was worried that you might be angry with me. By the way..." She remembered something and pulled out two violin concert tickets from her purse. She had prepared them in advance.
"Chandler, these are tickets to a concert by our favorite violinist, Mike. He's performing in Aguilisco the day after tomorrow. I've arranged VIP tickets through a friend. Shall we go together?"
Anyone else would have accepted this stunning invitation. However, Chandler declined, "I'm sorry, but I have a busy work schedule and won't have the time to go. You can enjoy it on your own."
Margaret's face stiffened. This was the first time Chandler had ever rejected her invitation.
Helen felt strangely awkward standing between them. "Um, maybe I should head back on my own then?"
