Chapter 6 But I’m Your Wife
She had no idea how many cups she had made. Claire felt so dizzy that she could not hold on any longer. When she entered the conference room with another cup of coffee, Mason had already disappeared.
He had not even said if she had passed or not, and just disappeared?
Claire placed the coffee on the table before she turned and left the room.
She just managed to catch Mason’s private car leaving the premises when she arrived at the ground floor of the main building.
She had been abandoned, again.
Claire laughed bitterly at herself. She should have expected it.
She had walked to the curb to hail a taxi when a silver car stopped in front of her.
“Sister-in-law, let me give you a ride.”
The car window lowered to reveal Liam’s gentle, handsome face.
Claire was stunned for a while before she shook her head and said, “It’s alright.”
If Mason saw her, he would say that she was being seductive again.
“Get in. You’ve been running around for several hours, you’re exhausted.” As he finished speaking, Liam unbuckled his seat belt and got down from the car to open the door for her. His actions were so gentlemanly that she could not refuse.
In the end, Claire got into his car.
“Thank you.”
“You’re too kind.” Liam smiled gently at her before reminding her, “Seatbelt.”
As they rode back in Liam’s car to the Yeich mansion, Liam was silent. He did not ask her any excessive questions and dropped her off at the door.
Claire was still exclaiming at Liam’s gentleness when she walked slowly up the stairs to her room.
How could two brothers differ from each other so much in terms of personality?
When she entered the room, Claire faltered in her footsteps.
Because her suitcase had been thrown onto the floor.
She froze for a few seconds before raising her eyes to look at the person in the room.
“Who asked you to fill my house with your things?”
Claire remained silent for a short while before walking up and picking her suitcase up. “I… I thought you weren’t coming back?”
On the night of the wedding, he had his men bring him away. Claire had thought he would not return.
“Hah, this is my room.”
Silent, Claire bit her lower lip. “But I’m your wife.”
“A wife who bears the name of your sister?”
Claire did not have anything to say in return.
It seemed that he would not let her stay in this room. It was clear from his words and actions that he was disgusted with her, but she could not leave.
As she thought of this, Claire looked at him with pleading eyes. “Can you please, just give me a corner of this room? I don’t need much.”
“No!”
Claire’s face paled. “Grandpa will notice if I leave.”
As Mason gave the order, Simon immediately came forth. “Miss Schmidt, please, don’t make me get rough with you.”
Claire bit her lower lip. “Is there no room for negotiation?”
Mason’s eyes were like a wolf’s. Deep, brooding, with flashes of fierceness in them.
After a moment of staring at each other, Claire silently turned around and dragged her suitcase out.
She closed the bedroom door.
“Young Master Yeich, it seems that she has backed down from the adversities.”
Mason’s lips curled in disdain. He had thought she had great perseverance, who knew that she had gotten defeated by this.
Hah, she could not even withstand a single blow.
“Has anyone been sent to the hospital?” Mason asked unexpectedly.
The expression on Simon’s face faltered. “Not… not yet.”
“So why are you still standing here?”
“I’ll get on it right away!”
Simon soon left. When he went out, he saw Claire standing by the door with her suitcase. He used his eyes to tell her that she would be better off depending on herself than others before leaving.
The next day.
When Simon came looking for Mason, his eyes widened when he took a look at the door.
He gently entered the room and woke Mason up, helping him to wash up and get dressed.
In the end, he could not resist saying, “Young Master Yeich, Miss Schmidt…”
Mason’s eyebrows furrowed together and the aura around him visibly chilled at the mention of the woman.
“Young Master Yeich, I do not mean to mention her on purpose, but she…” Unable to go on, Simon decided to not beat around the bush. “Maybe Young Master Yeich should take a look for himself at the door.”
“Bring me there.”
Despite having strong psychological endurance, Mason was still startled when he saw the woman asleep at the door, clutching a jacket tightly to herself.
Claire had set her suitcase at the side, draped herself with a jacket, and gone to sleep leaning against the wall. Probably sometime in her sleep, she had fallen over onto the floor and nestled herself into the jacket because of the cold while shivering. Only her small, pale face was revealed.
Her skin was so fair, it glowed. Her hair, although untreated, was straight and smooth. A few strands of hair were stuck on her forehead, adding an air of innocence onto her tiny face.
Looking at her shivering body, Mason found himself pitying her.
A moment later, he said coolly, “Wake her up.”
Simon started, “How should I wake her up?”
“...How do you want to wake her up?”
Walking over, Simon lifted his foot and kicked Claire in the butt.
The expression on Mason’s face darkened as he said coldly, “What are you doing?”
Simon looked innocently at him. “Waking her up.” he rubbed his nose as he finished speaking. “Does Young Master Yeich think that I’ve kicked her too lightly? Then I’ll go stronger.”
In Simon’s eyes, Mason despised Claire.
“That’s enough, I want you to wake her up, not hurt her.” Mason suppressed his temper that was about to explode.
“Understood!” Finally understanding what he meant, Simon bent down and nudged Claire’s shoulder. Deep in slumber, it took several tries before she opened her eyes with difficulty.
“Miss Schmidt, it’s dawn, time to get up.”
Was it dawn already?
Claire stared in confusion for a while before she sat up, rubbing her eyes while she looked at the bright skies.
Just like that, she had spent a night outside? Time went by so quickly…
“Who let you sleep at the door?”
As she pondered, a cold question was hurled towards her.
Claire raised her head and saw Mason staring unhappily at her.
She sat in a daze for a while, seemingly wondering what on earth was going on. A moment later, she hugged the jacket closer to herself as she said quietly, “I have nowhere to go.”
It was probably because she had spent a night on the floor, there was a nasal overtone to Claire’s voice.
“So you’re here to make a fool of yourself?”
Biting on her lower lip, Claire raised her head to meet Mason’s cold gaze as she said stubbornly, “If you think I’m an embarrassment, let me sleep inside.”
“You…”
Mason was at a loss for words. How dare she talk back to him.
Claire stubbornly maintained eye contact with him. When compared to last night, her complexion now was unnervingly pale, almost as if she were sick. Seeing how she looked now, Mason inexplicably felt his heart soften. He gave a cold snort.
“Let’s go.”
Simon came forward to push his wheelchair. “Young Master Yeich, what about Miss Schmidt? She…”
Mason’s head swiveled around, his gaze blazing. “Don’t embarrass me here.”
Only after they left did Claire pick up her jacket and stand up from the floor.
What he had said… that meant she could enter the room, right?
It did not matter what he had said, he had already left, she might as well go in and wash up.
When brushing her teeth, Claire felt nauseous. Holding herself up against the sink, she dry-heaved several times before she had finished brushing her teeth.
After rinsing her mouth, Claire felt chilly, so she took a hot shower.
She still felt cold after that, and her voice had turned hoarse. Head heavy, she felt dizzy.
After thinking about it, Claire decided to make a trip to the doctor.
