Chapter 39: Absence Makes Their Hearts Grow Fonder
Adam's apples bobbed nervously. Gazes dropped to the ground.
The treasurer sipped his wine and smiled. "We hear you, friend, and we follow you."
Paris tilted his glass at the stout guy, and their glass clinked joyously.
"Us too, Paris," the guy with lustful eyes muttered quietly.
The team stood in a toast to their intelligent and gallant leader. "To Paris."
Glasses clinked like the chiming of orchestra bells.
The sound of Maria's chuckles echoed in the prince's ears.
Her argument about him, the president of Walden College's student body leading them and bringing everyone into a new system of fairness and equality, was both intelligent and enticing.
He almost fell for it.
Things weren't as easy. The people created the hierarchy for a reason, and they would fight to keep it in place. Even if he tried something, a new equilibrium might be achieved, but the old hierarchy would still be in place. He was sure of it.
