Maria hastily looked away to sniff back the tears of worry, then turned back and kept her chin up.
"Fine!" the beast thundered, his breathing labored. "You have my word."
"And I will cooperate," she responded and quickly stormed off.
Once the door closed again, those broad shoulders sank under the sheer weight of helplessness brought on by memories of the haunting past and moments of the drowning present.
The beast focused his gaze on the table until it blurred.
A single drop of invisible hopelessness fell onto the glossy, dark brown surface and splattered in all directions of reality.
That tear would evaporate in time and be forever unseen and forgotten.

Maria slammed her door shut and leaned against it.
Her cheeks were already flushed and scalded with hot tears. She placed a hand over the tiny life growing peacefully inside her and covered her mouth to stifle her cries.
