CHAPTER TWELVE – A ROAD TRIP
Laura hesitated, then nodded, stepping aside to let him enter.
"Laura," Dr. Carter began as soon as the door closed. "I'm so sorry. This is all my fault."
Laura shook her head. "Dr. Carter, you didn't-"
"No, listen," he interrupted. "My research... it was more dangerous than I let on. Mr. Foster... he was part of it. I never meant for anyone to get hurt."
Laura felt a chill run down her spine. "What are you saying?"
Dr. Carter ran a hand through his hair. "I can't tell you everything. It's too dangerous. But I promise you, I'm going to make this right. I'm going to clear your name."
Before Laura could respond, Dr. Carter was gone, leaving her with more questions than answers.
Feeling overwhelmed, Laura stepped out onto her small balcony, gazing out at the twinkling lights of Miami. The cool night air helped clear her head, but she couldn't shake the feeling that her life had been irrevocably changed.
