In no time, the school's security team sprang into action. A man in a slick, dark suit pushed through the crowd, his face all business. "What's all this?" he barked, his voice bouncing off the sudden hush that fell over the onlookers.
Stacey, huddled among the crowd, heard someone call out, "Mr. Foster!"
Daniel Foster, the guy in the dark suit, talked tough, "Scatter now, or I'm docking your school points." The mob of students grudgingly dispersed at his word, leaving Stacey and Conor alone.
Seizing the moment, Stacey nudged Conor to the side, creating some space between them. Conor squinted at her, his face hard to read under the shade of his eyebrows.
"Mr. Burton, sorry for the late arrival," Daniel said, sounding genuinely sorry. "Next time, give me a heads-up."
Conor shrugged, "It was a last-minute thing. Besides, I was with Aurelia."
Hearing the name, Daniel swung his attention to Stacey. "Welcome. Aurelia."
"Who's he?" Stacey asked, not recognizing the man.
