The oasis had a comforting scent of rain—like perpetual droplets tickling my nose and filling my senses with a kind of romantic serenity. I smiled, looking up at the clear blue sky.
“Does it ever rain here?” I asked, noting the scorching heat that was now subdued by the canopy of trees around us.
“It does,” Bane replied slowly. “Only when it wants to, apparently. The desert folk are used to this kind of treatment from the sky. Don’t worry,” he added, patting my shoulder. “It is our way of life, and we are very much in love with it. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
His strangely intense eyes beamed at me, as though he wanted to tell me something important. His voice came out silky smooth, pulling me away from my fascination with a nearby tree where honeybees buzzed lazily.
“What?” I turned to him, my heart skipping a beat for reasons I couldn’t quite explain.
“I read something interesting,” he repeated as he walked to stand beside me.
“And what is this thing of interest?”
