“Do you have a problem?” Cressida’s eyes were full of worry. “Tell me, Talia,” she said.
“I don’t,” I said. “My brother was recently made Alpha, and perhaps I need to talk to Baron…” I stood up to walk out, but she pulled me back down, letting my butt hit the chair harshly.
“Talk to me,” she said, her tone harsh and authoritative. “I heard about your brother. Yes, he’s doing very well. But I need to know about you. You haven’t been yourself, and yes, I understand you are recovering, my dear.” She placed a hand on my thigh. “But, Talia, tell me the truth. What is going on? You don’t look well.”
“Is it wrong to come here? I just love this place and thought it was beautiful.” She shook her head. “I’m not buying it,” she said. It felt as though she was looking right through me, making an assessment of all my insecurities. She could see my flaws and my faults. I felt as though I was an open book for her to look into and simply play around with the pages.
