Chapter 21
The soft rain drummed on the window panes that morning, which sounded very quiet. Jennifer sat at the kitchen table hugging a warm mug of coffee. Byron had dashed out for a quick errand. "Pastries. Your lies. Just for you," he had promised her. The house really gave the impression of calmness and peace. For Jennifer, this was rare and something she was beginning to cherish.
She had opened an old and dusty photo album she hadn't touched in years when the doorbell rang. She stopped for a moment to think who it could be. Getting a little sense of danger she stood up carefully and walked towards the door, still enveloped in her cozy sweater and slippers.
When she opened it, her heart skipped a beat.
"Devlin."
He was standing there in the rain, only a small umbrella for cover. He looked different, older, tired, and maybe a bit more human than she could remember. He had perfectly styled messy hair now and eyes which used to have pride in them now.
"Can I come in?" he asked.
