Caitlin’s muscles were on the verge of giving out as she maneuvered the truck through the thick vegetation. Her hands, clamped tight on the steering wheel, were nearly numb. Each bump and jolt over the uneven terrain only added to her growing doubt. Maybe she had gotten lost after all. But as the truck bounced hard one final time, splashing through a shallow creek, a familiar sight caught her eye. She recognized the faint trail that led to the cabin. Relief washed over her as she turned onto the
narrow path. The road was rugged—pitted with holes and littered with rocks—but she knew it well. Each twist and turn was imprinted in her mind, and soon enough, the old cabin came into view.
Despite the relief of her surroundings, unease gnawed at Caitlin. She had tried to connect with Zendedari twice during the drive, but each time, he resisted her mental touch. Fear had begun to creep in. She knew Barry hadn't found him yet—she would feel it if he had—but the dread that something was wrong
