The surgery was scheduled immediately. I sat on a bench outside, waiting for the nurse to call my name. Damon stayed by my side, his face downcast. “Seraphina, I didn’t know your illness was this serious… Does Darius know? You’re about to die…” I closed my eyes, trying to focus as the haze in my vision slowly began to lift. Shapes started to become clearer again. “I don’t want to tell him. What’s the point? Anyway… he won’t care about me.” Damon immediately took my hand, his grip firm. “Come with me abroad. I’ll give up the company. Darius Nightbane will destroy Crestfall Dynamics, so let’s sell it and start fresh somewhere else. I’ll take you to the best doctors, the best treatments. Even if I have to spend everything I have, I’ll save you!” I lowered my lashes, feeling the weight of his words. It would’ve been a lie to say I wasn’t moved. How could I not be? Damon was willing to do so much for me, to fight so hard for my life. But it was too late. Darius had seeped
