“Hunter…” I watched tears ceaselessly flow from Maddox’s eyes as he rested his brother’s head on his thighs. Never in my life have I seen Maddox shattered like this before.
This is what despair does to us. It breaks us, sometimes beyond repair. Seeing him this way reminded me of how I was when Gramps had died. No amount of words could comfort me, I had lost my hero, my friend, and my only family. Maddox was no different. No matter what I would say, my touch would only be nothing but cold comfort at first. “Mad?” I whispered as my mate suddenly dropped to the ground too. “Mad!” I yelled, briskly scrambling to his side.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered as he held my cheek tenderly with his blood-coated palm.
