I gently stroked Desiree’s right hand while I was seated beside her on our bed. She looked so peaceful in her sleep yet the turbulence in my mind was the definition of chaos itself. It was hauntingly familiar to the night I almost lost her to my brother.
Now that I was thinking about it, that night was the beginning of our children’s nemesis. To think a painful past like that we had long buried would come back to haunt us this way. Was it our fault? Or was this the fate of our children to face travails just like Desiree and I did in our early days? Either way, what mattered to me more than anything else at this point was my mate.
