Alexander and Christine reached them, adding their strength to support Lucas.
"My son," Christine whispered, touching Lucas's face. "I always feared your father's legacy would be too heavy for you to bear."
Lucas managed a weak smile. "Not the time for deathbed sentiments, Mother."
"Then let's make sure it doesn't come to that," Alexander replied firmly.
Vanessa's transformation had reached a critical point. Her skin glowed from within, light spilling from her eyes and mouth. The stone floor beneath her had completely shattered, pieces floating upward in defiance of gravity.
"I can feel it all," she said, wonder and pain mingling in her voice. "Every wolf in both territories—they're all connected to me now."
