CHAPTER EIGHTY FIVE - What Darkness Fears Most
Lucas straightened slowly, his face pale but his eyes calculating. "It hurts you as much as it hurts me."
"A temporary inconvenience," Victor replied, though the strain in his voice belied his casual tone. "One I'm willing to endure."
"For what?" Lucas demanded. "This connection is killing us both. What could possibly be worth that?"
Victor's eyes gleamed with fanatical intensity. "Power. True power. The kind our ancestors wielded before they were weakened by sentiment and morality."
Alexander stepped forward. "This interview is over. Lucas needs to rest."
As they turned to leave, Victor called after them. "Ask your witch about the original text of the ritual, Lucas. Ask her what happens when neither party surrenders or dies. There's a third option she's not telling you about."
Alexander ignored him, pushing Lucas's wheelchair out of the detention area.
"He's trying to manipulate us," Alexander said once they were back in the elevator. "Don't listen to his lies."
