CHAPTER TEN – A PAST LOVER
Ms. Bernard fussed over Scarlett, the emerald green silk of the evening gown cascading down her slender frame. Despite the circumstances, Scarlett couldn't deny the dress was breathtaking.
It clung to her curves in all the right places, the plunging neckline daring yet elegant. A matching emerald necklace adorned her neck.
"There," Ms. Bernard declared, stepping back to admire her handiwork. "You look stunning, Scarlett."
Scarlett offered a weak smile, her reflection mirroring the turmoil within. Stunning or not, she felt like a gilded cage, trapped in a gown that cost more than her monthly rent.
As Ms. Bernard ushered her into the waiting limousine, a pang of guilt twisted in Scarlett's stomach. She'd lied to Clara, claiming a sudden work obligation to avoid the dinner date.
Was Clara suspicious? Angry? Pushing those thoughts aside, Scarlett rationalized that keeping Clara in the dark was for the best.
The car glided through the night, the cityscape a blur of twinkling lights.
