Marrying the Lockwood\'s Son (Part 6)
"It's your wedding with Christiano," Vallerie answered. Seeing how confused Adeline was, she explained, "As you probably know, I only have a grandson. His name is Christiano, and he got into a car accident two years ago. Now, he's in a vegetative state. But don't you worry, he'll definitely recover when you marry him!"
Adeline frowned at what Vallerie said, "But, I—" Adeline swallowed her direct disagreement. Instead, she put it in another way, "It's a little sudden. I haven't really given a thought about it yet."
Helen, who was sitting on the other side, chuckled and said, "Adeline, the Lockwood family is well-respected. Plus, Madam Vallerie has come to propose this marriage arrangement in person. You should see it as a blessing to be able to marry Mr. Lockwood."
Blessing? Adeline snorted.
Her gaze fell on Helen, who was smiling. At that moment, she wanted to stand up and question Helen that if she thought that it was a blessing, why didn't she let Zoey marry Christiano.
However, Adeline held it back. She saw the worry and helplessness in Ronald's eyes. Perhaps, everything had been planned, and she was the last to be informed.
Adeline took a deep breath as she thought of Sebastian and Zoey and said, "Okay, I'll marry him."
Everybody's gaze fell on Adeline. Vallerie gently patted Adeline's hand and took out a box from her bag. Under everyone's eyes, Vallerie opened the box.
It was a jade bracelet, which was white and flawless like suet, but it had a glowing sheen to it.
"What a fine piece of white jade!" commented Helen, and a trace of jealousy flashed across her eyes. She looked towards Adeline and said, "Adeline, look, Madam Vallerie really likes you!"
"Come, Adeline. Give it a try!" Vallerie called. She helped Adeline to put on the jade bracelet, nodding pleasingly, "It's so beautiful!"
"Mom, this is your favorite piece of jewelry. Adeline is lucky to have it," said Martha. Vallerie let go of Adeline's hand and drew their conversation to a close, "Now that it's decided, we should have both of you betrothed in a few days. I've checked, the ninth of October is nice, so let's set the wedding on that day."
Although Vallerie sounded like they were here to ask for consent, Adeline knew they came prepared, even with a date in mind.
Once the conversation ended, all of them stood up and bid their goodbyes. Vallerie headed out with Martha's supporting.
While Nicholas, nodding in agreement, exchanged a few words with Ronald. Then he looked deeply at Adeline before he turned to leave.
The living room went back to its normal stillness. Helen looked at Adeline and sneered, "It seems like luck is on your side. You're going to marry Christiano Lockwood!"
"Aunt Helen, if you think it's a good deal, I'm willing to let Zoey take my place and marry him," Adeline glanced at Helen and replied calmly.
"You—" Helen wanted to retort but immediately shut her mouth when she saw Ronald returning to the living room. She went upstairs, leaving the dispute unfinished.
"Adeline..." Ronald looked at Adeline. All he could do was just looking at her with immense guilt, as if the words were stuck in his throat.
"Dad, it's okay. I know what you want to say. I'm doing it willingly. Plus, the Lockwoods is such a distinguished family in Caulford City, so I don't have the shorter end of the stick for doing so."
Ronald had a mixed feeling about what Adeline said. Looking at her eyes, he said, "I didn't know they would come to propose... The company hasn't been doing well recently..." Ronald rubbed his hands together and felt even guiltier.
