Wendy was baffled. Jeremiah was too slick to be a child.
He patted her shoulder. "Just accept it. When we meet Mommy, I'll tell her that it's all my fault."
Wendy had no words. She felt as though she had been fooled by a child. Alas, she couldn't possibly make him return to Erethia alone, even though she believed that he could embark on the trip safely.
"Listen to me and stay here. I'll call Grace. If I don't, she and Teresa will worry about you."
"Don't worry. I left Teresa a note, telling her that I'm with you," he replied.
Wendy was once again taken back by the shrewd boy. She dialed Grace's number.
Grace answered her phone on the balcony with a mug of warm water in her hand.
"Wendy!"
Wendy stole a furtive glance at Jeremiah. "Grace, I had wanted it to be a surprise, but—"
Confused, Grace asked, "What's wrong?"
"I'm back in Taseville. I'm at the airport now. And… Jeremiah tailed me."
