Chapter 15
The phone fell from Grace's hand, and the rain poured down on it. Eventually, the phone's screen blacked out.
Grace leaned against Maxim's tombstone and hugged the wooden figurine tightly. While facing the cold wind and rain, she felt as if she saw Maxim walking toward her with a loving look on his face.
Those who loved deeply were idealists, and those who were detached were realists. But it didn't matter which type of person you were because in the end, everyone would have some sort of regret.
…
Back in Websmith Residence, Luther panicked at the sight of the call that had ended.
He called back again, but what he received was the detached tone of the automated voice as it said, "Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please try again later…"
Luther stood up and put on his coat before heading out. But as soon as he reached the door, he halted in his tracks.
Grace was probably playing hard to get right now!
They were both about to divorce, so what did anything she did have to do with him?
Thinking that, Luther returned to his room to sleep. But he didn't know why he couldn't fall asleep.
His mind kept replaying the words Grace had said earlier.
"If… I had known what my mother and brother did, I definitely… wouldn't have chosen to marry you…
"If I had known that… you liked Casey all along… I wouldn't have married you either.
"If I had known that my dad would get into a car accident on my wedding day… I wouldn't have married you."
Luther sat up once again and somehow walked over to Grace's room.
It had been more than a month since Grace left Websmith Residence. Luther pushed her door open and entered the dark room. It seemed absolutely depressing inside.
Luther switched on the lights and noticed that Grace's room was incredibly empty. She didn't leave any personal belongings behind.
He took a seat and pulled open the drawer to the bedside table.
In it was a small notebook, and in the notebook was written, "I believe that those who have truly chosen to leave must have experienced the most pain. Because they have long endured countless struggles before they made the final decision."
Luther looked at the elegant handwriting and let out a sardonic laugh. "Pain? You think I wasn't in pain when I was with you all these years?"
At that, Luther threw the notebook into the trash bin.
But before he left the room, he placed the notebook back onto the bedside table again. He didn't get a wink of sleep after.
…
Meanwhile, Charles had trouble sleeping as well. He thought that Grace seemed a little abnormal the past two days, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
Likewise, at 4:00 am, he received a call from Teresa.
"Charles, could you help me check up on Grace? I dreamt of something weird earlier," Teresa said.
Charles sat up and asked, "What did you dream of?"
"I dreamt that something bad happened to Grace. She was drenched in the rain when she came to find me and told me not to forget to take her home," Teresa replied.
As she was narrating it to him, Teresa began to tear up and said, "I'm afraid that something might happen to her. I called her earlier, but she didn't pick up. Just a few days ago, she asked me to pick her up on the 15th, and I felt that it was quite weird of her to say that…"
Having heard what she said, Charles thought of how Grace had been behaving recently and quickly put on his clothes. "Don't worry. I'll go look for her now."
They weren't staying far apart, and Charles arrived after ten minutes. He opened the main door, but it was abnormally silent.
The door to Grace's bedroom wasn't closed, and Charles could see that she wasn't inside.
Where had she gone off to at this hour?
There were two envelopes placed by the pillow, and Charles opened them. It was then that he realized they were her wills.
One of them was for him, and it said, "Charles, I've already transferred the rent to your account. Thank you for all your care in the past few days.
"Did you know? Ever since I came to Taseville, I never truly had any friends. I thought I was a really bad person before I met you because I never had any friends.
"Thankfully, I got to meet you again. You made me realize that I wasn't that bad, after all. I really have to thank you…
"Please don't be sad. I'm just going to see my dad. He'll take good care of me."
