She quickened her pace, barely finishing her breakfast before leaving the hotel.
Eleanor’s car wasn’t nearby, so she flagged down a taxi and headed straight for the Whales' residence.
The mansion’s grand hall greeted her with an eerie stillness. As she strode inside, the servants froze, eyes widening at the sight of her. Their expressions flickered with a strange mixture of shock and unease—too complex to decode in a single glance. Yet Eleanor didn’t pause. Ignoring the silent tension in the air, she made her way straight to her room, her heels clicking with quiet determination.
The moment she opened the door—
She froze.
There they were: her two children, curled up fast asleep on her bed. Still dressed in yesterday’s clothes, they looked so small, so peaceful. Their little faces were relaxed, untouched by the storm of adult worries that had kept Eleanor awake all night.
Relief washed over her, deep and quiet.
At least they were safe.
She had been gone all night, heart gnawed by anxiety
