CHAPTER FOUR - A LAUGH TOO FAMILIAR
Sarah paced the hotel room, her phone burning a hole in her pocket. The photo her cousin sent felt like a ticking time bomb. Emma emerged from the bathroom, her eyes rimmed with red.
"You okay, Em?" Sarah asked, forcing a smile.
Emma nodded, but her lip quivered. "Just tired. Ready for some retail therapy?"
Sarah hesitated, then decided. "Absolutely. Let's hit Fifth Avenue hard."
As they browsed designer boutiques, Emma's phone buzzed. Her face fell as she read the message.
"Marcus again?" Sarah probed gently.
Emma sighed. "Yeah. Just a quick 'have fun'. He seems... distracted."
Sarah bit her lip, the photo weighing heavily on her conscience. "I'm sure it's nothing. Come on, let's try on some ridiculously expensive dresses we'll never buy."
As Emma plastered on a smile, Sarah silently vowed to wait until they were home to drop the bomb. For now, she'd let her friend enjoy what was left of their getaway.
