CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY SIX – CASUAL TALK
Over the next few days, Joan ingratiated herself further with the Bianchi family. She attended a charity event they sponsored, interviewed several of their legitimate business associates, and even had a casual lunch with Marco's wife.
It was during this lunch that Joan had her closest call.
As they were finishing their salads, Marco's wife, Sophia, tilted her head curiously. "You know, it's the strangest thing. I was talking to my friend Gina yesterday - she works at the Times. I mentioned your article, but she said they didn't have any freelancers working on local business stories right now."
Joan felt a cold sweat break out on the back of her neck. She forced a laugh. "Oh, I'm not surprised. I haven't actually pitched the idea yet. I like to have all my research done first, you know? Makes for a stronger proposal."
Sophia nodded, but Joan could see a hint of suspicion in her eyes. "Of course. How sensible of you."
