Chapter 6 Fractures.
It was just another bright morning in Ashwood, and I was up, getting ready for school with that usual rush of excitement. But today, somewhere buried deep down, I felt a gnawing worry. Maya had been acting strangely these past couple of days—distant and aloof. I couldn't make out what was wrong, though I was really determined to get to the bottom of it.
I saw Maya standing at her locker with a frown on her face when I came to school. I approached her, taking a deep breath. "Hey, Maya, everything okay?"
She turned coldly toward me. "Everything's fine," she said shortly, slamming her locker shut.
I flinched at the tone. "You sure? You've been kinda off lately. Did I do something?"
Maya's eyes blazed at me. "You really don't know, do you?"
I shook my head, that sinking feeling starting in my stomach again. "No, I don't. Please, just tell me what's going on."
