During this time, Yvonne had not spoken a word for three months.
She remained silent, sitting day after day in her chair, staring blankly at the scenery outside as if time had completely stopped for her.
Though she no longer showed signs of self-destructive behavior and her emotions seemed to have stabilized, a deep numbness still enveloped her entirely.
“She hasn’t tried to harm herself again, and she hasn’t caused any trouble. She’s stable for now,” Joseph said softly into the phone, his voice tinged with exhaustion. “For now, she seems okay.”
There was a pause on the other end of the line, followed by a quiet sigh: “You’ve done your best, Joseph. Just take good care of her.”
Joseph hung up the phone and stood by the window, watching Yvonne in the yard.
She was leaning back in her chair, holding the little dog in her arms, her expression still indifferent, but at least she was alive.
This was all he could do.
