The venomous whispers hung heavy in the air, each hushed word a tiny needle pricking at Quam's patience. He couldn't take it anymore.
Bursting through the doorway, he caught the two female trainees mid-sentence, their gossipy expressions dissolving into startled fear the moment their eyes landed on him.
"What a fascinating display," Quam said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "I wasn't aware 'investigative journalism' was part of your training regimen. Perhaps you could devote some of that remarkable energy to honing your acting skills instead of dissecting the private lives of your colleagues."
Shame flushed Alice's cheeks. Her companion, shifted uncomfortably on her feet, avoiding eye contact altogether. Quam's words stung – especially for Alice, who harboured a secret, unrequited crush on him.
He saw it all on their faces – the mix of shame and indignation simmering beneath the surface. "Let me offer you a piece of unsolicited advice," he continued, his tone softening slightly
