Chapter 12: Clash of wills
The aroma of grilled fish and roasted vegetables filled the air, a tantalizing contrast to the bland crackers and steamed broccoli Mariana pushed around her plate.
"Mrs. Alarc?o," Mary cooed, her voice dripping with concern, "you hardly touched a thing. Is everything alright?"
Mariana forced a smile. "Just a bit tired, Mary. Long day at the office." A small lie, the truth feeling too personal to share.
Tiago, thankfully, seemed oblivious. He was engrossed in a conversation about a new business venture, his brow furrowed in concentration. Catching her eye briefly, he offered “Should Mary get you another thing to eat?”
"No, no, really. I'm not hungry."
"Perhaps an early night is in order then," Mary interjected.
With a wave of relief, Mariana rose from the table. "If you'll excuse me, I think I'll retire for the evening."
"Of course, Madam," Mary chirped, her smile a touch too eager. "Sleep well."
