Her Chance
(Cindy’s POV)
[A Day After the Cliff Accident]
My eyes flutter open, and the world is a blurry mess of light and shadow.
I blink, trying to focus, and the image slowly sharpens.
I'm in a tiny, cozy cabin, the scent of pine and woodsmoke filling my nostrils.
The sun streams in through the window, casting dust motes into a whirling dance within the air. My head pounds with a dull ache throbbing with every heartbeat. I try to sit up, but a sharp pain shoots through my arm and I wince, falling back onto the bed.
"Easy there, dear," a voice rasps.
I turn my head and see an old woman; her face is etched with wrinkles, but her eyes are kind and soft. She's sitting in a rocking chair by the fireplace, and a warm fire crackles merrily.
"Where. where am I?" I croak, my voice hoarse and dry.
"You're safe now," she says, her voice soft and soothing. "You're in my cabin. I found you at the base of the cliff."
My mind is racing, putting together how exactly this all happened.
