Joshua, Jeremy, and Emily merely stared at Janice as if they were watching a one-woman show. None of them said a word.
Janice had gotten up at 4:00 am and waited in line at The Palm Diner for an hour and a half to buy Joshua breakfast. She told him exactly that as she set the takeout containers on the table.
She walked up to him and pointed at the shadows under her eyes. "See, I barely slept last night, all so I could get you breakfast first thing in the morning. Are you going to be nice and have some of the food?"
Joshua might have imagined it, but he thought Janice was trying to mimic Queenie's soft, bell-like voice when she said the last part. He wondered if he had heard it wrong and glanced at Jeremy for confirmation.
When he saw Jeremy speechless and pursing his lips awkwardly, he knew at once what the assistant was thinking.
"Have you had breakfast yet?" Joshua asked, his gaze flickering from Jeremy to Emily, who stood helplessly by the door.
