That evening, when Joshua returned home from work, Queenie had prepared a warm stew.
"Welcome back, Mr. Newman. The weather's getting colder, so I thought a stew would be nice tonight to warm us up." Queenie wheeled a cart carrying a pot of stew and some salad over to the dining table.
Joshua looked at Queenie, who was wearing an apron with her long hair neatly pinned up with a flower-shaped clip. Her gentle and homely demeanor was something he found very appealing.
"Queenie, I have something I want to give you," Joshua called out, motioning for her to come over before she got too busy with dinner preparations.
"What is it?" Queenie obediently walked over while wiping her hands on her apron to dry the water from washing vegetables.
"Here." Joshua placed a long, red jewelry box into her hands.
Queenie had never owned any jewelry because she couldn't afford it. Knowing that making money wasn't easy, she never spent on such things.
