Chapter 17 What’s Important is Your Happiness

Jade's mother did not ask anything, she just said, “There are many people in the world, and there will be people you like, along with people who like you. Sadness only lasts for a moment. What’s important is your happiness.” Jade sniffed and agreed to her words. “Zephaniah will definitely come here, but I don't want to see him. Please give him the divorce papers and let him sign them.” “Alright.” Jade called Easton and politely asked whether she could stay at his place. Easton did not ask anything but just gave her his door code. Jade took Taylor and left her mother’s place. The next afternoon, Zephaniah came back from Seagan City, looking travel-worn, and drove directly to Jade's mother’s place. Jade's mother opened the door and saw his usual indifferent expression on his face. “What's the matter?” “Mom, is Jade here?” Zephaniah asked nicely, but he was incredibly fretful at the moment. He had only learned that the representative of Vantage Company was Jade when he returned to his company yesterday. She left her ring in his office and left. When he called her, she cried asking for a divorce, and she had been very firm in her stance. But several meetings stood in his way, and he only managed to catch a flight back this afternoon. “She’s not around. But she left something for you.” Jade's mother turned around and went back in. Zephaniah took the opportunity to inspect the house. When he found out that Jade was really absent, he became even more frustrated. Jade's mother took out a document and handed it to Zephaniah. When Zephaniah saw the words above the document, his face turned even darker. “Mom, I don’t want to divorce Jade.” “But she wants to divorce you. Zephaniah, my family never treated you badly, and Jade is also very devoted to you. But there’s nothing you can do when things just don’t work out between the both of you anymore,” Jade’s mother said. “I know I'm busy with my work. I told her before—” “Are you really busy with your work? Zephaniah, have you ever truly loved my daughter?” Jade's mother interrupted him. Zephaniah stayed rooted to the spot and did not utter a word. When she saw this, Jade's mother's voice became colder and harsher. “Zephaniah, my daughter is a woman, no matter what, and she wants children. She is aging, and she isn’t going to remain young for much longer. If you still have some bit of guilty conscience in you, let her go.” Jade's mother shoved the divorce papers into Zephaniah’s hands and chased him out. Zephaniah was stunned as he stood at the door, clutching the divorce papers. Didn't he tell Jade that both of them would discuss the divorce after he came back from his business trip? Why did Jade become so determined with her decision all of a sudden? For some unknown reason, Zephaniah became even more agitated. He thought of Jade’s company, but when he reached the place, he found out that Jade had taken leave a long time ago, and she never mentioned how long she would be taking leave either. It was as if she would not appear as long as he did not sign the divorce papers. After he realized he was not welcomed in both places, Zephaniah burned with rage, and he tore apart the divorce papers viciously. Why was Jade the one who had the right to marry him when she asked, and could now force him to sign the divorce papers just because she wanted to divorce him? Did she ever ask for his opinion? He must find Jade and talk to her. Over the course of the few days she was on leave, Jade stayed at Easton's house and accompanied Taylor. She did not go anywhere. Jade's mother called her and said that Zephaniah came back from Seagan City the day after she left. He looked for her everywhere and even went to her company. As Jade listened, she found the situation hilarious. Before their marriage, she and Zephaniah were like people from two different worlds. Their paths in life were like parallel lines that would never meet. They only met once a week. Now that they were going to divorce, he looked for her everywhere. It was ironic. “Mom, you don't have to let him in if he comes back to find you,” Jade said as she went to the hospital and made an appointment for an abortion. She would rather not have a child if she could not give him or her a complete family. Jade contacted her lawyer and drove to the prison for a visit. After waiting for a long time, Jade finally saw her father being led into the visiting room by two policemen. Jade's father seemed to not have had a good life over the past few months. Half of his hair had turned white, and his back was a little hunched. When he saw Jade, his expression was filled with remorse. Jade's eyes turned watery. She pointed at the phone, and her father picked it up. Then, she said, “I've got something with me. I'll have someone send it to you later. It's the verdict.” Her father clutched the phone, but didn't know what to say. “Jade, I’m so sorry.”
