"Is that your daughter?" her old classmate asked warily.
Shelmaine held Tammy, having left Nancy, the nanny, at home. She nodded, "Yes, she's my daughter."
"She's beautiful! She looks just like you. No doubt she's your little girl. How old is she now?"
"Not even one," Shelmaine replied.
"When did you get married? You never told us! We've been trying to reach you. None of us could get in touch."
Shelmaine wasn't close to her university classmates, let alone her high school ones. Her high school years weren't the happiest, and she didn't make many friends. Her introverted nature made it hard to connect with people, except for Isabelle, whom she stayed close to. She had also avoided class reunions, finding them anything but genuine.
