Chapter 5 Chapter 4
He watched the scenes replay in front of him, even though knowing he was dreaming, or more like having a nightmare
he was standing in front of her, Doctor Cassie. She held his hands in hers and told him of his wife's last wish.
He was stunned, beyond stunned that someone would so willingly give up her heart to someone else, even though she knew she'd die it was still a selfless act to give her heart to someone she doesn't know. To redeem someone even when she knew she was doomed, doomed to an eternal darkness, doomed to death.
"No, Cassie. No! Why will she want that? She can't just give her heart to someone she doesn't know. That's wrong, I won't allow that." He said, the muscles in his jaw were twitching uncontrollably and Cassie back away in her chair afraid he was going to lash out if she said any other thing to piss him.
"Toby, take it easy alright, that was what she asked with her last breath, it was what she wanted most and you can't just go against that no matter how much you don't like it, you have to respect her last wishes." She said pulling his strings.
His striking blue eyes turned dark at the uncontrollable anger rising in him, he looked more of a beast now than a human and below it all, she could she it. And she understood. He was hurt. hurt that her last wishes had been to save a girl she knows nothing about, her last wish hadn't been anything about him, maybe to see him or to have the doctor deliver heart felt last messages to him. That meant that within her last minutes of breathing, she hadn't thought about him, she had thought about a girl whose heart was damaged due to her reckless living.
That broke him more than anything else and also made him hate the unknown girl with every fiber of his heart. He despised her because she was all his wife thought about before she gave up her last breath.
"Where is she?." He sneered.
"W-what?." Cassie asked confused.
"Where is that piece of shit that you want to give my wife's heart to?."
"Uhm--look Toby, you don't have to do this.."
"Tell me right now." He ordered in a voice that reminded her that every fiber of human in him was gone, lost to his anger triggered by his pain.
But she was a doctor, meant to treat her patients not give them away to something dangerous coming to them, even though her hatred for the girl was almost as much as Toby's she still stood up for her protection.
"I won't let you do anything to her."
"You don't have to let me do damn thing just point the direction to that scum who thinks she can have my wife's heart because she was so blinded by pity and decided to give away her heart to someone not worth it."
"I agreed with you, she doesn't deserve it but it wasn't her decision it was your wife's."
Toby moved dangerously close to the doctor, his hands fisted at his sides and anger flying in sparks in his eyes which made Cassie back to the wall shakily but also stood her ground with her chin raised up to defy him.
Toby realized that she wasn't going to back down and went for the other option.
"Fine then." He shrugged.
"If that's the way you want it then I guess I'll go find her myself he said and turned ignoring Cassie's shrieks of protest and slammed the door to her office before stalking down to the hall where patients who needed to be operated where.
He got to the entrance of the hall and looked around him, seeing that the hall was packed with five different rooms on each side. He started forward, going into each room and slamming the door shut when he read what they were to be operated for in the process waking most of the patients from their drug induced sleep.
The all were to be operated for different reasons none was close with what he wanted. He then spotted the room he'd always remember for life, where his wife took her last breath, he started forward slowly, sure that whatever he was looking for was in there but as he reached to open the door, two arms lifted him from his feet and threw him down, hard, a hand closed over his mouth and he saw that a security man had tackled him, while the other held a syringe in his hand, he handed it over to the one stranding him and he watched as the man injected whatever was in the syringe into his arm.
His lids started dropping almost immediately, he was giving in with only one thing in his mind, the only thing he managed to see,...
Blonde...
He woke from the dream, trying to catch his breath as he reminded the dream, ever since his wife's death and he had been back home, night mares has been been a normal thing for him, the same pattern, always.
He'd rewatched the scene of when he heard the news of his wife's last wish in his dream and it always brought a ache in his heart.
He laid back down, to stare at the ceiling but was pulled yet into another dream.
Mara stood in the middle of the garden, collecting flowers of all kinds and colours and bringing each of them to her nose to inhale.
The breeze started to blow harshly and that collected the flowers she had gathered from her hands and she looked sad after it did.
Toby moved to go comfort her but couldn't, soon she noticed him and the smile was etched back into her face.
The sun rose at the back, blending with her yellow gown which was the colour of sunrise. It was her favorite.
She moved to step closer but was stopped by the heavy wind which blew her hair in all direction and made her free gown jump in the air.
All at once the wind grew angry and started to blow everything away, even the root of plants were uprooted, it was an unnatural wind.
Toby screamed for Mara to come close to him but his screams were drowned in the merciless wind.
She noticed him calling her and smiled.
Suddenly the wind seized and a black mist rolling in circular motion and as tall as Mara herself started to reach for Mara from the back.
"Mara! Watch out." He called out pointing to the approaching evil but she only smiled.
All at once he was struck with the realisation that this woman in front if him was gone, from his world.
"Mara please come back to me."
"I am with you."
"No! you're not."
"I am."
"Fuck no! Mara, how are you alive when I can't even see you? Your burial is two days from now and you tell me you're alive. Spare me that shit and come with me."
She shook her head still smiling, he noticed the difference between his Mara and this other one, Mara would have shouted at him for using a bad word but this one didn't which made him very sad.
He missed her scoldings.
"OK, at least tell me how you intend to come back to me." He said with a little hope in his voice.
She opened her mouth to say something, probably what would give him the answers he had been looking for but before she could say it, the black mist swallowed her.
"No!." Toby screamed out from his dream, his hands unconsciously reached towards Mara's side of the bed when he hands met with nothing.
He sighed remembering he was alone, for the first time in his life.
The cab dropped her in front of the estate and she she got out of the cab after tossing money to the cab driver who was mumbling something to himself the rudeness of rich kids. That irritated her.
"Suck it up, old man." She snapped at him and turned not waiting to hear the insulting words hurled at her.
"He should be grateful it wasn't the peacocks that he carried maybe then he'll know the real meaning of 'rude'."
The peacocks are her step sisters from her step mother who moved in with her and her father immediately her mother's death.
She had read Cinderella's story so many times so she wasn't surprised when her stepmother and her peacocks behaved exactly like in the fairytale story.
The only difference is that, she was no Cinderella who needs a ball gown, she'd rather go for shorts and a bigger hood. And her life wasn't a fairytale, it was about as real as it could be.
She was greeted by many servants who worked for her senator father in the estate, ignoring most of the greetings, she entered the large mansion which looked boring and lifeless to her.
She skipped stairs so shed get to her room quicker to avoid her step mother's nags, she didn't need one of those, all she needed was one hour in a tub soaking away.
Imagine her surprise when she opened her door to see, in her opinion, a very ugly looking and witchy stepmother in her room standing in front of her bed with a fake and forces smile on her lips and a look that told her that told her she should have just died in the hospital.
"Welcome back, Melanie Walker." She sneered.
