When the caregiver saw Lily, she immediately set down the towel in her hand. "Ms. Joyner, you're here. We've all had lunch, have you eaten—oh, why are your eyes red? Have you been crying?"
"No, it's just the cold weather. My eyes are sensitive." Lily forced a stiff smile. "You can take a break. I'll look after him this afternoon."
"Okay." The caregiver noticed her raspy voice. She glanced at Lily again and said before she left, "Ms. Joyner, cheer up. Hayden needs you. I talk to him every day, but he doesn't react. However, whenever I mention you, he'll look at me."
"I understand. Thank you." Lily walked over to the chair by the bed and sat down. She picked up a warm towel to wipe Hayden's face.
The caregiver left, and only Lily and Hayden remained in the room.
Lily wasn't her usual talkative self, and she finished wiping Hayden's face in silence. After setting down the towel, she held Hayden's hand, pressed it against her forehead, and fell silent.
