Lily's explanation did little to calm Xavier's anger. However, he released her and walked over to the sofa, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
"If you're so open and honest, why were you parked on the street next to Lupier and lying to me about working late?"
Lily took a deep breath, nodding slightly. "Lying was my mistake, but would you have accepted the truth?"
Xavier pressed his tongue to his cheek, a smirk of disdain crossing his face as he spoke arrogantly. "Don't flatter yourself. It was just a meal. I don't care."
His face was contemptuous, as though the idea of Lily dining with another man meant nothing to him. In fact, even if she had been dining alone with Terence, he wouldn't have minded. After all, he didn't love her.
Lily's heart ached at his words. "If that's how you feel, maybe you should get some rest." With that, she turned to leave, grabbed her suitcase, and headed upstairs.
