Lydia's lower lip trembled. "I... I'm sorry. I just thought... Well, I've been feeling a bit lonely, and I wanted to make some friends. I didn't think you'd mind."
Ella felt her resolve weakening at the sight of her cousin's wounded expression. "It's not that I mind you having friends, Lydia. It's just... we have rules here. And responsibilities. Sophie needs her routine, and Lucas and I have work to do."
Lydia nodded, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "I understand. I'll tell everyone to leave right away. I didn't mean to cause trouble."
As Lydia turned to go, Ella felt a pang of guilt. "Wait," she said, touching Lydia's arm. "They can stay for a little while longer. Just... please clean up when they're gone, okay?"
