Chapter 47 The Human Bazaar
The quarrel had not yielded the victory Elaine had hoped for, yet it had granted her some freedom.
No longer was she confined to her room, though the cost of this newfound liberty was the presence of guards lurking in the shadows. Still, Elaine was grateful for the company. She was no longer alone.
Cheryl was surprised to hear that Elaine had spoken rebelliously in the hallway without suffering any punishment from Sherman.
Though she suspected that something must have happened to Elaine to provoke her behavior, she could not bring herself to pry any further. Instead, she suggested they take a walk.
"The sun looks lovely today," Cheryl said, donning a pink tracksuit and sunglasses. Her skin glowed a healthy shade of wheat.
But Elaine was not feeling up to it. "Excuse me, Cheryl," she said, turning her back to her friend. "I think I'll lie down a while longer."
