Bella didn't know how much the bangle cost, so her non-answer left everyone mildly disappointed.
As time ticked past the start of the workday, Bella noticed it was already 20 minutes past, and neither Zoe nor Lia had shown up. She glanced at the penalty jar. It looked like it was about to gain two more contributions—just enough to cover a group lunch next time.
It wasn't until almost 9:00 am that Lia and Zoe strolled in, one after the other. Lia, looking sheepish, immediately dropped cash into the jar. "Sorry, I overslept. Zoe called me last night and told me that she'd be late today. So, don't fine her, okay?"
